What is the Columbarium?

The word “columbarium” originates from the Latin “columbary,” which means a place for doves to nest, symbolizing God’s spirit and peace. In ancient Rome, Christians began using catacombs for their ashes, leading to the modern concept of a columbarium. Ours continues serving our members, from baptism to eternal rest.

Location and Design

Our columbarium resides at the east end of the Educational Wing, extending towards Hazel Drive. It’s accessible both from the church and the street via its own sidewalk. But, did you know about its unique design symbolism?

The niche wall forms a circle with the center inside the church, signifying that our earthly remains rest within the loving embrace of Christ’s church. Inside, you’ll find a sense of seclusion without confinement, thanks to strategically lowered walls and narrow openings inspired by Tibetan monks.

Symbolic Enhancements

Over time, we’ve added thoughtful enhancements. Benches offer comfort for visitors, and a water fountain symbolizes change, cleansing, and resurrection. The placement near the children’s playground underscores the “circle of life,” highlighting our continuous connection with the church.
